Which is harder? anodized aluminum or zinc plated steel?also, what kind of anodized aluminum is hardest?

i am buying chain mail armor and am wondering which of the two is more durable.

The steel is very much harder than aluminum (no matter how the aluminum is treated). If it's only for show, then go for aluminum ... it's about 1/3rd the weight. Ovi.schi is correct that hard anodized aluminum is the hardest surface for aluminum, but aluminum is still soft (relative to any kind of steel) and cannot be through hardened.
