Can I stop an apple tree from producing fruit?

Previous owners have planted two apple trees. I don't have a green thumb and have been unable to produce edible fruit for 8 years now. Consequently, the apples just fall to the ground, attract insects and cause me to pick them up every time I cut the grass.

If you're looking for apples that look like store bought, you won't get them without some effort.
I don't know the variety of the trees, but are they both the same variety, or each a different variety?
Apple trees need to be pollinated in the spring with pollen from a DIFFERENT VARIETY of apple tree. They also need fertilizer, and to be sprayed with insecticides (natural or not) to look "store bought" good. Apples not sprayed with insecticides may not look pretty, but are fine to eat or use for preserves if picked off the tree. The "drops" may be fine to eat too if not left so long as to be claimed by the bugs.
If you are not providing maintenance, and your trees are both the same variety, that may explain your lack of edible fruit.
Choices: Provide minimal maintenance, and if the trees are the same variety, plant a third of a different variety, or take one down and plant a different one (maybe a later or earlier producer to lengthen the harvest). OR
Maybe it's not worth the trouble? Do you even like Apples? Take them both down and start over with a flowering tree that does not produce fruit, ie. Dogwood.
